National Law Journal Recognizes James Hugh Potts II as a Litigation Trailblazer.
Founder and trial lawyer, James Hugh Potts II, has been named to The National Law Journal's 2020 list of Trailblazers in Litigation for his work in medical and qui tam cases. Each year, the NLJ spotlights those attorneys who are truly agents of change.
In the profile, Potts was recognized for finding systemic problems in hospital companies and holding offenders accountable. “By and large, physicians, physician’s assistants and nurses are there to do the right thing. The issue is usually the system or when a good system is in place that people aren’t following. When we get good results for patients, hospital companies will hear about it. And then things change,” Potts told NLJ. In one case success, Potts represented a pregnant woman who suffered from placental abruption who ultimately lost her baby when no one at the hospital called a doctor until it was too late. He identified systemic issues and obtained a favorable settlement. These cases ultimately caused that portion of the hospital to close. Eventually, the hospital changed owners and the hospital company left the state.
Prior to returning to law school to become a trial lawyer, Potts worked as a CPA at the largest accounting firm in the world, Arthur Andersen & Co.. As a trial lawyer he transitioned into systemic medical and qui tam cases early in his career when approached by a couple who lost their son due to medical malpractice. “When we win, things change. Our goal is to make healthcare safer. And we’re doing it,” added Potts.
